No one could have anticipated that 2020 would be the year that the legal profession went virtual. In 2019, we talked as it this was 10 years away. Today, legal departments, law firms and courts all across the world have embraced and implemented these technologies and new working practices. This transformative shift for the legal profession has brought new opportunities and risks for General Counsel. The imposing risks have been quick to appear, but understanding the opportunities has been much more clouded. In this new digital age, how can you managing a remote workforce, continuing to drive productivity and inclusivity, over these new digital platforms?

Legal Professionals have an ethical duty to be competent in keeping client data confidential. All too often, information security is not prioritized by firms. It costs money to protect data and they frequently resist budgeting for it, even though prevention is far less expensive than investigating and remediating data breaches. But there are a host of free and budget friendly tips.

Students and young lawyers often use an "ad hoc" approach treating "every problem as a different problem." Since I have needed to teach students who have never done transactional law how to begin working on complex projects very quickly, I have tried to create a teachable, universal approach to beginning transactional assignments. This approach I will teach holds true whether the solution requires a client call, an internal/external memo, drafting a contract, or prosecuting intellectual property (copyright, trademark, or patent registrations).

This presentation focuses on the main concepts of privacy law, exploring domestic and international laws.

The presentation will discuss important concepts such as freedom to operate and patent infringement, how patents compare with trade secrets, and monetizing patents.
