Description

Panelists will also discuss best practices in terms of responding to disciplinary complaints and common mistakes made. Lastly, the panelists will discuss the aggravating and mitigating factors weighed in determining sanctions.

The panelists who will peel back the curtain on the disciplinary process are Julia A. Sheridan, Bar Counsel, Board of Overseers of the Bar, in Maine, whose experience includes trial and appellate practice; Eva J. Dossier, Co- Managing Member, Stanley, Reuter, Ross Thornton & Alford LLC, who represents lawyers and law firms, including in relation to ethics and professional liability matters; Laura N. Gryb, Bar Counsel, who represents The Florida Bar in prosecuting ethical violations before the Florida Supreme Court. This panel discussion will be moderated by Melissa M. Lessell, Equity Partner, Deutsch Kerrigan LLP, who is a member of the Firm’s Commercial Litigation and Professional Liability Department, her practice focuses on the defense of professionals and directors and officers in litigation and disciplinary proceedings.

Eva J. Dossier practices primarily in complex litigation and civil appeals. As part of her practice, Ms. Dossier represents lawyers and law firms, including in relation to ethics and professional liability. She is a managing member of the firm.

Ms. Dossier graduated Order of the Coif from Vanderbilt University Law School. She was Editor in Chief of the Vanderbilt Law Review and a John W. Wade Scholar. Ms. Dossier received the Vanderbilt Pro Bono Service Award, as well as Vanderbilt Scholastic Excellence Awards in Constitutional Law, Criminal Procedure, Torts, and Wills and Trusts. Ms. Dossier received a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Tulane University, where she was a Deans’ Honor Scholar and graduated cum laude with academic honors. After law school, Ms. Dossier served as a law clerk to the Honorable James B. Loken, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and then the Honorable Lance M. Africk, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Ms. Dossier has served on the Lawyer Disciplinary Committee for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana since 2017. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Bar Association, the Insurance Committee of the Louisiana State Bar Association, and the Board of Trustees of CrescentCare (previously the NO/AIDS Task Force). She is an American Bar Foundation Fellow. Ms. Dossier is a frequent seminar speaker and an adjunct professor at Tulane Law School, where she teaches an upper-level experiential course on written discovery.

Melissa Lessell

Melissa is an AV-rated equity partner at Deutsch Kerrigan, LLP in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a member of the Firm’s Commercial Litigation and Professional Liability Department, where her practice focuses on the defense of professionals in litigation and disciplinary proceedings and complex commercial litigation. She helps professionals, officers and directors navigate through disciplinary actions, ethics investigations, malpractice, negligence and breach of fiduciary duty claims and lawsuits.

Ms. Lessell regularly writes and presents on the subjects of ethics, legal malpractice and professional responsibility. She is a Committee member of the ABA National Standing Committee on Lawyers Professional Liability, Vice Chair for the ABA Tips Professional Liability Insurance Committee, and has served in a variety of roles for the ABA Young Leaders Division. Locally, Ms. Lessell is a member of the 2018-2019 Louisiana State Bar Leadership Class, is routinely recognized as a rising star in the field of professional liability and was listed as a “Top Lawyer” by New Orleans Magazine in the field of professional liability defense.

Melissa earned a J.D. cum laude from Tulane University Law School in 2009, and a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego in 2005.
