CLE Center is pleased to present a one-of-a-kind CLE experience - Improv(ed) Legal Skills with Thomas J. Galan, Esq.

This course is designed to help attorneys develop the ability to win more cases, negotiate higher settlements and attract new clients. Most attorneys are not aware that “thinking fast and reacting in the moment” can mean the difference between success and failure as a lawyer. This course will cover dealing with the unexpected, intuition, listening, agreement and other critical legal skills that are supported by the fundamentals of improvisation.

How can improvisation skills benefit an attorney?

Walking into a trial, conference or client meeting without being 100% prepared is neglectful lawyering at best and malpractice at worst. Nevertheless, attorneys still find themselves in situations where they must think quick and deal with the unexpected. Lawyers must also understand how to embrace risk, use body language, and develop rapport. All of these skills are honed through the study of improvisation. Best of all, the improvisation environment is a safe, low-stakes practice zone, where lawyers can take risks without consequence.

The program is accompanied by a course book, available in the "Library" section of the classroom, which provides guidelines for all exercises and "games,", allowing attorneys to use the practical skills and exercises detailed at any time in the comfort of their own home or office - or even right before starting a mediation or beginning trial.

Tommy Galan is a professional speaker, performer and the Director of Corporate Programming at The Peoples Improv Theater in New York City where he teaches the benefits of improv to lawyers, executives, and business teams. As a performer and accomplished attorney, Tommy developed "Improv(ed) Legal Skills," a 3-Credit NYS Continuing Legal Education Course that he has delivered to the NYC Law Department, the American Bar Association, Hofstra Law School, and hundreds of lawyers in both the private and public sector. In March 2012, the CLE course was recorded by ALM Media for internet distribution, and in November 2012, Improv(ed) Legal Skills will be taught in Toronto at Osgood Law School. Tommy's Improv Business Classes entertain and educate clients such as the NBA, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, AMC Networks, Avrett Free Ginsberg, Medallion Retail, Benchmark Hospitality, New York University, Columbia University, Hofstra Law School, and Baruch College. Tommy performs, speaks and teaches regularly in NYC where he lives with his wife and two sons.
