Description

GDPR went into effect in May 2018. Globally, new enforcement authorities stepped forward, while companies worked to incorporate new guidance and enforcement priorities into their corporate compliance programs. In this session, we will discuss considerations and provide real-life scenarios for companies when dealing with international investigations.

Adam’s practice focuses on discovery and information governance. As part of Shook’s Data and Discovery Strategies group, Adam advises clients on best practices for preservation, collection, processing, review and production as part of the discovery process. He has experience in preparing and negotiating protective orders and production protocols, as well as opposing “discovery on discovery” efforts.

Adam volunteers with The Electronic Discovery Institute, a nonprofit organization that studies litigation processes and produces educational programs for the benefit of the federal and state judiciary. He spearheads EDI’s Spoliation Guide, a 50-state case survey intended to aid practitioners who need more information than they can find in a case law primer, whether to prepare for a strategy session with outside counsel or a client or a meet-and-confer with an adversary.

Adam received his JD at the Syracuse University School of Law in 2017.

Jack Thompson is a corporate eDiscovery and Legal Operations professional, specializing in the advancement of efficiency of legal technical operations and information governance. From 2007 to 2014, Jack managed Purdue Pharma’s Legal Operations Program focusing on opioid product liability and patent litigation. In 2015, Jack migrated to Atlanta, GA and assumed a Legal technology management position at the United Parcel Service (UPS) managing global legal technology implementations and EDRM processes for the company. After 1 year with UPS, Jack moved to The Coca Cola Company as a IT Business Partner for the Global Legal Department, specializing in technology and process roadmap implementation for TCCC’s global legal landscape.

In 2016, Jack relocated to New Jersey to assume a director position at Sanofi, a global pharmaceutical company, managing global Legal Operations programs focusing on technology management, information governance and financial management within internal and external parties. Jack is now the global Legal Operation Director for Sanofi spanning in multiple areas of work including eDiscovery, Law Firm relationship management, vendor management, and technology roadmap development. Jack has a master’s degree of Business Administration with a focus on global operations and financial management for business and has contributed to legal cost savings and management education programs throughout his career. Jack is a Board member for ILTA and advisory contributor and writer for ACC Legal Operations forums.

For 25 years, Michael has managed teams and designed systems to continually improve legal operational efficiency and profitability. He is a frequently referenced author and speaker firmly entrenched at the intersection of law practice, technological innovation, and business process expertise in legal service delivery, where he  is currently lead operations and process excellence for Ingersoll Rand's Global Legal Department.

Michael's journey also includes advising the visionary Clearspire New Law start-up along with nearly 15 years as Director, Strategic Legal Technology for Liberty Mutual Insurance Enterprise Legal Services transforming a corporate legal department of ~2,000 professionals across 70 locations with $1B managed legal spend.

Early in his career as a customer-centric technical strategist, he  focused on infrastructure and knowledge management delivery while serving as IT Director for two large Kansas City firms, Spencer Fane and Wallace Saunders, as well as working as a regional technologist for the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, and database vendor Informix (IBM) technical support & quality assurance organizations.

Michael is certified in multiple practices & technologies, including Lean Six Sigma, Cisco, Citrix, eDiscovery (Relativity), Documentum, iManage, Microsoft SharePoint, Oracle, Tableau & more. I joined the American Bar Association Law Practice Management Section in 1995, recognized as a Law Department Champion in 2011 through an ILTA Distinguished Peer Award, and has enjoyed active involvement with the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC), International Legal Technology Association (ILTA), and serves as faculty for the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) LegalOps annual symposium and section steering committee.

Michael also has extensive professional experience planning and producing live events, including concert sound design, audio engineering, stage lighting, various multimedia audio-visual technologies and tour management logistics.
