Augmentation, Analytics & Automation: How Data Can Enhance Litigation

Damien Riehl is a lawyer and technologist with experience in complex litigation, digital forensics, and software development. A coder since 1985 and for the web since 1995, Damien clerked for the chief judges of state and federal courts, practiced in complex litigation for over a decade, has led teams of cybersecurity and world-spanning digital forensics investigations, and has led teams in legal-software development. At Fastcase, Damien helps lead the design, development, and expansion of Fastcase products — including its citator — integrating AI-backed technologies to improve legal workflows and to power legal data analytics.

Michael Sander is the Director of Analytics at Fastcase and the Founder and Managing Director of Docket Alarm, a company he founded as a litigation associate in New York City. Docket Alarm has introduced litigation analytics to thousands of attorneys for the first time, paving a new way for attorneys to approach the law. Docket Alarm has received annual Innovation Awards in 2015 and 2019 and a 2020 nomination.

In 2018 Docket Alarm was acquired by Fastcase, a legal tech innovator since 1999, providing hundreds of thousands of attorneys access to the law through their bar memberships and firms. Today Michael continues to lead Docket Alarm and Fastcase’s analytics strategy.

As part of his job, Michael advocates for greater access to legal materials. He has advocated as an *amici curiae* at the U.S. Supreme Court for greater legislative material and the Federal Circuit for access to court records.

Michael has given guest lectures and seminars at schools such as Cornell, Hofstra, Vermont Law School, Southwestern Law School, and Stanford. Michael participates in hackathons and innovation challenges, and speaks frequently at legal technology events such as LegalTech, AALL, and ILTA and intellectual property law events such as INTA and AIPLA, among others.

Michael has a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell, an MS in the same from UCSB, and a JD from Cardozo. Michael is a patent attorney and is barred in New York, where he currently resides.

Phil Rosenthal is the President, Chairman, and co-founder of Fastcase, the smarter alternative for legal research. Fastcase serves more than 500,000 attorneys nationwide and has been recognized for its technological leadership. The company was named to the 2010 and 2011 e-Content 100 and Forbes Magazine declared Fastcase’s approach to visualizing legal research was “a fundamental break from the way legal research has been performed since the mid-1700’s.” Phil began his career as a physicist, studying string theory and cosmology. Then he was a nuclear and patent attorney at Covington & Burling in Washington, DC. and served on the Board of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Washington/Baltimore. He co-founded Fastcase in 1999. Phil has a B.S. in physics from Yale University, where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and earned his J.D. at Harvard Law School (magna cum laude), where he assisted Professor Arthur Miller in updating the classic treatise, Federal Practice and Procedure. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, where he earned both Masters and Ph.D. degrees in physics.
